Gorom-gorom: The first edition of the Festival of Cultural Diversity in the Sahel commenced on Saturday, June 27, 2026, in Gorom-Gorom under the theme 'Cultural Diversity: A Factor for Peace and Community Development.' Administrative authorities and event organizers emphasized the festival as a platform for showcasing collective resilience and promoting social cohesion.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the regional representative for Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism, Sylvain Nagalo, who also serves as the president of the special delegation of Gorom-Gorom, commended the efforts of the Association for Culture and Development (ACD). Led by cultural promoter Issoufa Mouzerata Dicko, whose arrival on camelback was memorable, the initiative aims to highlight the nation's cultural diversity as a significant asset.
Nagalo pointed out that Burkina Faso is characterized by its blend of communities coexisting harmoniously, making cultural diversity a strength that enriches national identity and bolsters collective resilience. The festival's theme resonates with the current context of security and social challenges in the region.
Nagalo emphasized the importance of culture as a means to unite people, promoting social cohesion and serving as an essential tool for sustainable development. The festival's activities, including traditional dances, cultural parades, craft exhibitions, local gastronomy, and reflective spaces, are designed to celebrate Burkina Faso's cultural heritage while fostering social unity.
The Ministry of Culture's representative reiterated the government's commitment, under President Captain Ibrahim Traor©, to prioritize cultural promotion as a development pillar and a symbol of cultural sovereignty. The festival is envisioned as a key event for promoting intercultural dialogue, peace, and the cultural prominence of the Sahel region.
Mrs. Hadjiratou Brahima Ciss©, the godmother of the festival's first edition and president of the citizen watch of D©ou, encouraged people to view cultural diversity as a source of unity. She emphasized the shared territory, destiny, and aspiration for a peaceful future despite linguistic and traditional differences.
In light of the challenges facing the Sahel region, Ms. Ciss© highlighted the festival's role in fostering gathering, dialogue, and strengthening social cohesion among communities. She urged young people to uphold cultural heritage and promote values of respect, tolerance, and solidarity, asserting that collective efforts will lead to a more united and prosperous Sahel.
