FESPACO 2023: Tunisian cinema wins 5 prizes, “Ashkal” by Youssef Chebbi awarded Golden Stallion of Yennenga

The murder mystery film “Ashkal” by Tunisian-born Youssef Chebbi won the Golden Stallion of Yennenga at the 28th edition of the Ouagadougou Film and Television Festival (FESPACO), whose prizes list was unveiled on Saturday evening. Besides this distinction, “Ashkal” was awarded the prize for best sound. The fiction film “Under the Figs” by Erige Sehiri won for its part, the prize for best female and male performance awarded to all the actors and actresses. In the documentary competition, “Dead Angle” by Lotfi Achour received the Poulain d’or for short films. Six Tunisian films were shortlisted in the official selection of the 2023 FESPACO, organised on February 25-March 4 under the theme “Cinema of Africa and Culture of Peace.” The Tunisian 7th art was also represented by the Manouba Higher Institute of Multimedia Arts (Isamm) in the official selection of cinema school films. The jury for the official competition for feature-length fiction films was chaired by Tunisian producer Dorra Bouchoucha. A list of 15 feature-length fiction films was in the running for the Golden Stallion. Two women filmmakers distinguished themselves by winning the Silver and Bronze Stallions, awarded respectively to Apolline Traoré from Burkina Faso for her film Sira and Angela Wamai from Kenya for her film Shimoni. FESPACO which is Africa’s biggest film festival, is organised every two years to honour and promote African filmmakers and showcase hundreds of African films in various categories. The Stallion of Yennenga is awarded for a fictional or documentary feature movie chosen for its ability to relay the realities of Africa.
