Luanda: The remains of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, a former Vice-President of the Republic and a significant figure in the MPLA, were interred with state honors at Alto das Cruzes Cemetery in Luanda. The burial occurred on Monday, following his death on the 18th of this month.
According to Angola Press News Agency, the ceremony was attended by thousands, including family, friends, government officials, MPLA leaders, and civil society representatives, who gathered to honor one of Angola’s most distinguished figures. Before the burial, a tribute ceremony was held at the Protocol Complex of the Presidency of the Republic, attended by Angolan Head of State, Joo Louren§o. Messages were read, celebrating “Nand³’s” achievements in political life and his role in consolidating the Angolan State.
Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos’ involvement with the MPLA was pivotal throughout Angola’s modern history, spanning from pre-independence to the nation’s establishment as a sovereign state, and through the peace process and national reconstruction. He was remembered by party leaders and family members as a person of integrity and commitment to Angola.
His career commenced in the Angolan Police Corps in 1975, where he rose to head of division in 1978. Between 1982 and 1995, he led the National Police, later serving as deputy minister of the Interior and head of the Information Services. He became Prime Minister in 2002, a position he held until 2008, and then served as first Vice-President from 2010 to 2012. He also presided over the National Assembly twice, from 2008 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2022.
Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos was honored with the Independence Class Medal by President Joo Louren§o for his contributions to the nation, as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence.
