Farmers in Sono Celebrate Profitable Onion Harvest Amid Challenges

Koosin: Farmers in the undeveloped plains of Sono expressed their satisfaction on Sunday, January 25, 2026, with this year's onion harvest, thanks to God and also to the support of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP). Issa Zono, a large-scale farmer, acknowledged that the dry season campaign was a success. "We are also pleased with the price of a sack of onions, which is 20,000 CFA francs per sack; it's really good," he stated. According to Burkina Information Agency, another farmer, Adama Konaté, added that they are very happy because the sale of onions is also going well this year. However, he cautioned against overlooking other issues, noting pockets of leaf drought and equipment problems. 'Advice and support from extension agents would be welcome,' Mr. Konaté stated. Producers complain about payment delays because buyers resell the onions in other markets before returning for payment, resulting in long waits and a high risk of a buyer disappeari ng with the producers' money. He added that the excess weight on the bags, commonly called "chapeau," exceeds the specified limits. While onion production is certainly a very profitable activity, the standardization of bag prices and weight remains a hurdle if the relevant department does not intervene. The producers' heartfelt plea is for the implementation of a farmgate price regulation mechanism.
