TSUMEB: A 33-year-old farm worker died after reportedly ingesting an insecticide at a farm near Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, authorities confirmed. The man, identified as Kandere Shitunda, was transported to Tsumeb State Hospital by his employer on Saturday night but succumbed to the chemical’s effects shortly thereafter.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Deputy Commissioner Titus Ekandjo, the regional police’s crime investigations coordinator, stated on Thursday that the incident occurred on Saturday around 8 p.m. Shitunda was brought to the hospital, where he passed away approximately 40 minutes later while receiving medical attention in the casualty ward. The deceased’s family has been informed of his passing.

“The reason why the deceased consumed the substance is not known,” Ekandjo remarked, highlighting the lack of clarity surrounding the circumstances that led to Shitunda’s ingestion of the insecticide.

Ekandjo also noted a delay in the reporting of the incident to the police, stating that the nu
rses on duty at the time did not inform law enforcement until Wednesday. An autopsy has been scheduled as part of the ongoing investigation into the matter.
