Fada N’Gourma – On Saturday, June 8, 2024, the city of Fada N’Gourma marked World Environment Day with a comprehensive city sanitation session led by the Regional Directorate in charge of the Eastern Environment. The event, originally scheduled for June 5, was part of a global recognition but took place three days later in this eastern city.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Lieutenant-Colonel Romuald Nikiéma, the day’s activities emphasized the importance of maintaining clean waterways and public spaces. Teams focused on cleaning major thoroughfares and public areas including the Fada N’Gourma Regional Hospital Center, the local garrison, and the governorate of the East. Efforts were particularly concentrated in the city of Yendabili where residents were educated about the risks of clogged gutters due to improperly disposed waste and the benefits of not throwing plastic bags in open spaces.

Siaka Ouattara, the Secretary General of the Eastern region, expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting that a clean environment benefits not just the authorities but the entire population. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the guidance provided by environmental technicians to foster a healthier living environment, which could potentially reduce the need for medical interventions.

Lieutenant-Colonel Nikiéma thanked the regional and municipal authorities and the local communities for their involvement and support in the activities of the day, stressing the collective effort required to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
