HOMA BAY — At the conclusion of the second Homa Bay County International Investment Conference held at Tom Mboya University, climate change experts have emphasized the need for enhanced public awareness and education on the impacts of climate change. Leading the call was Professor Benard Muok, a prominent climate change expert, who stressed the importance of sensitizing communities to the realities and challenges posed by climate change.
According to Kenya News Agency, the battle against climate change is a collective responsibility that requires the active involvement of all sectors of society, including the private sector. He highlighted the crucial role of investments that not only generate financial returns but also contribute to mitigating climate change effects. Professor Muok pointed out that while government action, donor support, and NGO initiatives are vital, the private sector’s engagement is equally critical in addressing the issue effectively.
Ester Mutua, a specialist in the carbon market, supported Professor Muok’s call for public sensitization, stating that educating the community is a fundamental aspect of the solution to climate change. Both experts underscored the significance of funding in combating the effects of climate change, advocating for a more inclusive approach that leverages resources from various stakeholders.
During the conference, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga’s efforts to combat climate change were highlighted, particularly her collaboration with local communities to develop carbon sinks—a strategy aimed at achieving climate stability. Governor Wanga detailed her administration’s adoption of a public participation model, which includes the formation of climate change committees at the village level. These committees are tasked with educating and mobilizing community members, illustrating a proactive approach to environmental stewardship at the grassroots level.
The emphasis on community education and private sector involvement underscores a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive and collaborative strategies to address the pervasive challenges of climate change.
