Brussels: The European Union (EU) has paused its retaliatory measures against the United States for 90 days. However, the Union issued a warning to President Donald Trump over a trade deal.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, US President Trump has abruptly backed down on tariffs on most nations for 90 days. In response, the European Union said today it would hold back on retaliation measures announced on Wednesday in response to US tariffs targeting European steel and aluminum.

The EU was due to launch counter-tariffs on about pound 21 billion ($23.25 billion) of US imports starting next Tuesday. But the European Union has announced it is putting retaliatory measures against the US on hold for 90 days after Trump unveiled a similar pause yesterday.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed the EU’s stance on the matter, stating, “We want to give negotiations a chance,” on X. She also mentioned, “If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in.”

Despite the temporary pause in EU-US tensions, US-China trade tensions persist. After Beijing imposed an 84 percent tariff on US goods, Trump retaliated by announcing a 125 percent levy on Chinese imports. Meanwhile, China has declared it will “fight to the end” if no compromise is reached.
