EU and Kenya Sign Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya and the European Union have formalized a landmark Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), marking a significant step in enhancing trade relations and economic collaboration between the two entities. This agreement is set to bolster bilateral trade, increase investment flows, and contribute to sustainable economic development.

According to Africa News Agency, The European Union described the agreement as its most ambitious trade deal with a developing country, emphasizing sustainability provisions such as climate and environmental protection, labor rights, and gender equality. The signing ceremony occurred on December 19 in Nairobi, attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Kenyan President Dr. William Samoei Ruto. The EU, being Kenya’s primary export destination and second-largest trading partner, recorded a total bilateral trade of £3.3 billion in 2022, a 27% increase since 2018. The EPA is expected to provide significant benefits for Kenyan businesses and exporters by fully opening the EU market for Kenyan products upon its enforcement. It also aims to attract EU investment in Kenya by enhancing legal certainty and stability.
