Ethiopia’s President Stresses Importance of Digital Transformation for Africa’s Future

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – President Sahle-Work Zewde emphasized the critical role of accelerating digital transformation to achieve inclusive and sustainable development across Africa. This statement was made during a session focused on enhancing digitalization across the continent, held at the Pan-African Hall in the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the ongoing discussion, themed “Expansion of Digitalization for Africa Transformation,” addresses the indispensable role of technology in unlocking Africa’s potential. She highlighted that fast-tracking digitalization is essential for addressing challenges efficiently and offering rapid solutions, asserting that such expansion is pivotal for realizing a prosperous Africa by 2063.

The president also referenced the implementation of the continental digital transformation roadmap for 2023-2030, noting Ethiopia’s alignment with this vision through its digital 2025 strategy. This national strategy encompasses the broadening of telecom infrastructure, internet access, and artificial intelligence initiatives within the country.

However, President Sahle-Work cautioned that while digitalization can significantly contribute to economic growth, it also poses security risks if not managed correctly. She urged African leaders to ensure that future generations excel in technology, underlining the necessity of accelerating digital transformation to secure sustainable development on the continent.

The discussion, coinciding with the 37th AU Summit, saw the participation of high government officials, heads of institutions, and Mayor Adanech Abebe. It serves as a platform for AU member country leaders to deliberate on the integral role of digitalization in facilitating Africa’s continental transition.
