Ethiopia’s Parliamentary Diplomacy Shields National Interests

ADDIS ABABA – The Deputy Chairman of the House of Peoples Representative’s Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee, Fethi Mahdi, reported significant achievements in parliamentary diplomacy during the 2016 fiscal year aimed at safeguarding Ethiopia’s national interests. These efforts were highlighted in an exclusive interview with ENA, where Fethi discussed the strategic interactions with international counterparts.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopia’s parliamentary diplomacy involved numerous engagements with foreign diplomats, ambassadors, and lawmakers. These interactions, both within Ethiopia and abroad, were strategically executed to advocate for the interests and aspirations of the Ethiopian people. “Our parliamentarians actively expressed Ethiopia’s stance on development, peaceful coexistence, and cooperative international relations during these discussions,” he explained.

Additional insights from Isa Boru, Deputy Chairperson of the Law and Justice Affairs Standing Committee, and Moga Ababulga, a member of the Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee, emphasized the role of these diplomatic efforts in addressing regional peace and reinforcing Ethiopia’s sovereignty. The collaborative discussions also aimed at correcting misunderstandings and enhancing foreign dignitaries’ comprehension of Ethiopia’s policies and perspectives.

The reported activities underscore the effectiveness of Ethiopia’s parliamentary diplomacy in promoting its national interests on an international stage during the concluded fiscal year.
