ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s extensive from dawn to dusk tree planting campaign promises to instill a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship for future generations, remarked Minister of Justice Gedion Timothewos. Today, millions of Ethiopians responded to a national call to plant 600 million trees in an effort to enhance the country’s green landscape and tackle climate change challenges.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, who participated in planting activities in Lemi Kura sub-city alongside students and local residents, the campaign is integral to nurturing a nationwide culture of environmental care. “This campaign is more than just planting trees,” he noted, “It’s about cultivating a culture of environmental stewardship throughout Ethiopia.” The minister stressed the importance of collective efforts in such national projects, which he believes will yield substantial benefits for both the country and its future inhabitants.
The campaign, initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has seen enthusiastic participation from people across all demographics, with adults planting at least 20 seedlings and youth contributing with at least 10 each. This mobilization is part of a broader strategy to significantly increase Ethiopia’s forest cover and address the adverse effects of deforestation and climate change.
