Ethiopia’s Adwa Victory, GERD Showcase the Heroism and Success of Its People, Says Yaekob Arsano

Addis Ababa: Ethiopia’s historic Adwa Victory and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) are monumental achievements that have showcased the country’s heroism and success on the global stage, according to Yaekob Arsano, a renowned Political Science and International Relations researcher at Addis Ababa University.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, the 129th annual Adwa Victory Day will be celebrated with the theme: ‘Adwa: The Victory of the Black People’. In an exclusive interview with ENA, the scholar elaborated on the significance of the Battle of Adwa, stating that the country’s triumph over the Italian forces at Adwa.



Yaekob also emphasized that the victory not only represented a crucial moment in Ethiopia’s defense of sovereignty but also had a profound global impact. “The Battle of Adwa became a symbol of resistance against European colonialism, inspiring independence movements across Africa,” he underscored.



The scholar also pointed out that the Adwa Victory laid the foundation for the country’s enduring legacy of self-determination, which continues to resonate today. Mentioning Ethiopians’ success story in this modern era, the scholar also referred to Ethiopia’s successful construction of the GERD, which stands as another powerful example of the nation’s resilience.



Built through the country’s own knowledge, determination, and political will, the GERD has become a symbol of Ethiopia’s success and ambition on the global stage, he added. According to the scholar, the country’s growing international acceptance has been growing along with its increasing influence in the rise of Africa.



He encouraged the current generation to draw inspiration from both the Adwa Victory and the GERD, urging them to continue working relentlessly for national, continental, and global development. Both landmarks, he said, serve as models of resilience and achievement by demonstrating the power of unity and determination.
