Makindu – In a significant operation, Makindu police have detained 47 Ethiopian nationals along with a driver for illegal entry into Kenya. The arrest occurred in Makindu town, Makueni County, highlighting ongoing challenges with illegal immigration in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the group was apprehended at the Rubis Petrol Station near Makindu town on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The police acted on a tip-off about individuals emerging from a container at the station early Saturday morning.
Commander Polloh reported that the Ethiopians were en route to Mombasa, traveling in a truck that had presumably crossed the Kenyan border. He noted that conditions inside the container became unbearable for the passengers, leading to their discovery when the truck stopped at the Rubis petrol station. The stop might have been intended to allow the passengers to get fresh air.
The police have taken all suspects into custody at the Makindu police station for further investigation. Additionally, the truck and container used for transport have been secured at the police station. The suspects are set to be arraigned in court following the completion of investigations, marking a decisive step in addressing illegal immigration in the area.
