Addis ababa: Participants of the first African Defense Ministers conference visited the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission today, where Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael highlighted the significant reforms undertaken by the Ethiopian Federal Police over the past six years, aiming to enhance peace and security across the continent.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the briefing was part of a series of engagements that also included tours of the Information Network Security Agency (INSA) and the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute. Commissioner General Gebremichael emphasized the importance of collaboration between police and military sectors to achieve common security objectives. He pointed out that Ethiopia’s security sector reform has been extensive, with the police force adopting international best practices and a holistic approach that has been successful in other nations.

The Commissioner General detailed the implementation of various initiatives aimed at fulfilling the constitutiona
l obligations of the police force. These reforms span several aspects, including organizational structure, budget, policies, strategies, infrastructure, and human resources. The Federal Police has also embraced modern technology, developing command and control centers, digital communication tools, and advanced investigative devices to modernize its practices.

A key innovation highlighted during the visit was the Global Citizen Engagement System, a new application designed to improve community interactions with the police. This initiative is part of a broader effort to digitize traditional policing methods and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of police services.

Furthermore, the Ethiopian Federal Police has crafted a ten-year strategic plan with the ambitious goal of becoming one of the top five police institutions in Africa. This plan is a testament to Ethiopia’s commitment to establishing a world-class policing institution that not only serves its people but also sets a standard for policing on a g
lobal scale.
