Ethiopian Diaspora Youths Participate in Chaka Project Seedling Planting Initiative

CHAKA, ETHIOPIA – In a vibrant display of cultural reconnection, second-generation Ethiopian diaspora teenagers participated in a seedling planting event at the Chaka Project today, under the “Back to Your Origins” initiative.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the event marks the third round of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s invitation for diaspora youths to engage with their heritage through hands-on environmental activities. The prime minister’s call started on December 30, 2023, aiming to involve these young people in various cultural and developmental projects through September 30, 2024. Today’s planting event attracted teenagers from across the globe, including South Africa, Canada, and the United States, who expressed joy and pride in contributing to Ethiopia’s reforestation efforts.

Zefitret Esuendalew, a participant from South Africa, shared her excitement about leaving a legacy in her homeland, highlighting the deep personal impact of the experience. Similarly, Eyoel Yared from Canada and Kibir Michael from the United States reflected on the significance of their participation, emphasizing the blend of fun and fulfillment found in the initiative. They, along with other participants, echoed a sense of gratitude toward Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for fostering such a meaningful connection to their cultural roots.

The teenagers also voiced a collective call to their peers in the diaspora, encouraging them to visit Ethiopia and engage with their heritage, thereby strengthening their ties to the country and its people.
