ADDIS ABABA — In a stirring address marking the 128th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa, Ethiopian Chief of Staff Field Marshal Birhanu Jula called upon the nation’s youth to uphold the unity and solidarity exemplified by their ancestors in the historic conflict that halted the Italian colonial ambition in Africa. The celebration comes at a time when Ethiopia stands on the cusp of significant national achievements, including the nearing inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the recent opening of the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Victory of Adwa not only represents a pivotal moment in Ethiopian history but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for freedom and liberation across the African continent. He highlighted the battle’s role in galvanizing black people worldwide in their fight for freedom, underscoring Ethiopia’s longstanding position as a vocal advocate for the liberty of black populations and a staunch supporter of Pan-Africanism.

Field Marshal Birhanu emphasized the unique significance of this year’s anniversary, which coincides with momentous developments such as the GERD’s inauguration, symbolizing Ethiopia’s continued commitment to self-determination and progress. He lamented that the remarkable triumph at Adwa had long lacked a fitting commemoration, a void now filled by the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum.

Turning his focus to the present, the Chief of Staff lauded the Ethiopian National Defense Force’s ongoing efforts to maintain regional peace and security through their sacrifices. He expressed optimism about Ethiopia’s peaceful endeavors to regain access to the sea, suggesting that such a success would further bolster the nation’s role in promoting stability in the surrounding region.
