Ethiopian Ambassador in India Highlights Africa’s Digital Progress on Africa Day

NEW DELHI — During the International Conference on Digital Growth in Africa, held on Africa Day 2024 at the University of Delhi, Ethiopian Ambassador Demeke Atnafu emphasized the significant advancements in digital technology across the African continent. The event, organized by the Department of African Studies, focused on celebrating the socio-economic transformations enabled by digital growth.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ambassador Demeke, serving as the Chief Guest, addressed the gathering about the pivotal role of digital technologies in modernizing various sectors across Africa. He detailed how the expansion of mobile connectivity, the rise of e-commerce platforms, and the emergence of tech startups are fundamentally altering communication, interaction, and business practices throughout the continent.

In his speech, Ambassador Demeke particularly highlighted Ethiopia’s endeavors in integrating digital technologies into its economy. He pointed to the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy, initiated in 2020, which aims to use digital solutions to drive economic growth, enhance public services, and promote social development. He also noted the significant impacts of telecommunication reforms, including the sector’s liberalization in 2020, which have spurred competition, improved services, and made internet access more affordable.

Ambassador Demeke concluded his remarks by emphasizing the importance of strengthening Africa-India relations to harness opportunities in the digital era, suggesting that collaboration between the two regions could lead to mutual benefits and shared prosperity.
