Addis Ababa: In a landmark move, Ethiopian Airlines Group has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Boeing Company for the purchase of 20 Boeing 777X-9 passenger aircrafts. The signing ceremony, held this evening, was graced by Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tassew and Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, Brad McMullen. According to Ethiopian Airlines, this deal marks the airline as the first in Africa to order the continent’s largest twin-engine aircraft, totaling an investment of approximately $11 billion. Mesfin revealed that of the 20 aircraft, 8 have been definitively ordered, with delivery schedules spanning from 2027 to 2030. This purchase extends Ethiopian’s orders from Boeing to 104 aircraft, underlining the airline’s ambitious expansion and modernization efforts. The event was attended by key figures including Lieutenant General Yilma Merdasa, US Ambassador Ervin Jose Massinga, and other dignitaries, highlighting the significant bilateral cooperation
between Ethiopia and the United States.
