ADDIS ABABA—Ethiopia, in partnership with UAE's AMEA Power, has launched the Aysha Wind Power Project, aiming to establish the largest 300 MW onshore wind project in the Horn of Africa. The agreement, involving a $620 million investment, was signed by the Ministry of Finance and AMEA Power, marking a significant step in Ethiopia's commitment to green energy.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, who spoke at the signing ceremony, the Aysha project is a cornerstone of Ethiopia's energy policy and symbolizes the nation's dedication to sustainable development and energy diversification. The power generated from this project will be sold to Ethiopian Electric Power under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement, reflecting a long-term commitment to renewable energy.
The project is expected not only to contribute significantly to Ethiopia's energy capacity but also to stimulate community development, enhance industrial productivity, and promote technological advancements. Shide highlighted the strategic location of Aysha as pivotal for future investment in logistics and other industrial capacities. The project aligns with global shifts toward sustainable and renewable energy sources, emphasizing Ethiopia's role as a regional leader in green energy transition.
Furthermore, the finance minister discussed Ethiopia's broad economic reforms, which are supported by strategic initiatives across all sectors, including significant public-private partnership improvements. These reforms aim to foster closer economic ties and cooperation with international partners, such as the United Arab Emirates.
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting the project's role in advancing energy transition in Africa. He revealed that AMEA Power is also working on other major projects in Africa, including additional wind and solar ventures, underlining the company’s commitment to renewable energy across the continent.
The Aysha Wind Power Project is also expected to create over 1,500 direct jobs during its construction and operational phases, thereby contributing to Ethiopia’s socio-economic development. Al Nowais praised Ethiopia’s strategic positioning and clean energy commitments as key factors attracting ongoing investment.
