Ethiopia Taking Right Measures for Development and Prosperity, Says Morocco Ambassador to UN

ADDIS ABABA—Ethiopia is implementing the right measures and strategies for the development and prosperity of its people, according to Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale. The ambassador, who had visited Addis Ababa a decade ago, was in the capital to participate in the Preparatory Committee for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4).

Approached by ENA, Ambassador Hilale remarked on the transformation of Addis Ababa, attributing it to effective leadership and investments aimed at improving the lives of the Ethiopian population. “Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is a real leader, taking bold steps for the economy, stability, and prosperity of your country. That is the kind of leadership that we need in Africa,” he stated.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopia is making decisions for its people by understanding their context and identifying obstacles to development, rather than being dictated by external influences. He highlighted initiatives such as tree planting, mobilizing civil society, supporting small-scale projects, and implementing impactful projects for farmers as tangible actions reflecting visionary leadership.

He emphasized that while not all challenges can be resolved at once, effective governance and visionary leadership are essential for guiding countries towards development. This involves making sound decisions, combating corruption, promoting inclusivity, empowering women, attracting investment, and reforming justice systems. “Ethiopia is actively pursuing these goals, setting an example of progress and transformation,” he said.

Reflecting on his visit to Addis Ababa a decade ago for the first UN conference on financing for development, Ambassador Hilale lamented the unfulfilled commitments made then by the international community. He stressed the importance of developing the private sector, utilizing national resources, and adapting economic plans to local capacities to finance development based on priorities.

The ambassador concluded by observing that unity, complementarity, and initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) adopted by the African Union are key to achieving development and growth in Africa.
