Addis Ababa: Ethiopia is increasing efforts to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon in response to the challenging situation in the country, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Nebiyat Getachew, the ministry’s spokesperson, addressed the media, detailing the government’s initiatives to assess the conditions faced by Ethiopians in Lebanon and facilitate their safe return.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, a technical committee has been established to coordinate the evacuation efforts, and approximately 51 vulnerable individuals have already been repatriated. Over 3,000 more are registered for return as the government works closely with international organizations and institutions. Additionally, Nebiyat announced Ethiopia’s election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2025-2027 term during the 79th UN General Assembly. He highlighted Ethiopia’s third term on the council, marking its ongoing commitment to promoting human rights at both national and international levels.
Nebiyat further noted the Ethiopian delegation’s active participation in the assembly, including sideline discussions aimed at advancing Ethiopia’s national interests and fostering partnerships with BRICS member countries. The delegation also raised concerns about the post-ATMIS situation in Somalia and Ethiopia’s role in the Horn of Africa.
