Addis ababa: Ethiopia has underlined the critical importance of veterinary services in maintaining the health and wellbeing of the nation’s livestock. This recognition came from State Minister of Agriculture Fikru Regassa during the opening of the Ethiopian Veterinary Association’s (EVA) 50th anniversary and 37th annual conference in Addis Ababa.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, State Minister Fikru Regassa, speaking at the event themed “One Health, One Welfare, One Planet,” emphasized the veterinary association’s significant growth and achievements since its establishment in 1974. Over the decades, EVA has built robust networks among veterinary professionals, policymakers, academics, researchers, veterinary regulatory bodies, development partners, private veterinary service providers, and livestock producers.
Regassa noted the interconnectedness of human livelihood and health with animals and ecosystems, highlighting that animals contribute high-quality protein essential for human nutrition. The food sy
stem’s close link to animal health and ecosystem integrity was also stressed. The State Minister called for enhanced animal welfare standards and the preservation of ecosystem integrity, underscoring the broader benefits of prioritizing animal health not only for farmers’ livelihoods but also for public health.
“As we engage in meaningful discussions and exchange ideas throughout this conference, let us reaffirm our commitment to promoting sustainable smart agriculture, enhancing animal welfare standards, and preserving the integrity of the ecosystem,” Regassa stated.
EVA’s President, Bojia Endebu, reflected on the association’s evolution from its 13 founding members to now over 2,000. He described EVA as a crucial professional hub for academicians, researchers, and service providers in the animal health sector, which has fostered collaboration among various stakeholders in livestock institutions.
