Addis Ababa — Ethiopia is vigilantly monitoring developments in the Horn of Africa that could potentially threaten its national security, according to a statement issued today by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The statement expressed concerns about the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to a new peace support mission, highlighting the risks involved.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the region is navigating through “uncharted waters” as the African Union and the United Nations prepare for this critical transition. The statement emphasized Ethiopia’s proactive engagement in ensuring the peace and stability of Somalia and its surrounding region, underscoring its long-standing efforts toward regional security and cooperation. Despite these efforts, the spokesperson pointed out that Ethiopia’s concerns and those of other Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) have been largely overlooked, with Ethiopia often expected to overlook hostile statements and actions that undermine the efforts and sacrifices of its defense forces.
The Ministry’s statement also highlighted ongoing facilitated discussions with the Government of Somalia, noting “tangible progress” despite challenges. It accused the Somali government of colluding with external actors who aim to destabilize the region, which could reverse the gains made against regional and international terrorist groups. The statement called on all parties involved in the authorization of the new peace support mission to consider the legitimate concerns of the regional countries and the TCCs.
Reiterating its commitment to peace, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all involved to reflect on the potential consequences of inflaming tensions and to work collaboratively to ensure the stability and security of the Horn of Africa. The spokesperson concluded by affirming Ethiopia’s dedication to peaceful resolutions and cooperative efforts with Somalia and the international community.
