Ethiopia Enhances Support for Agricultural Exports to Boost Economy

ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopia's recent policy reforms and targeted support measures are set to enhance the capabilities of agricultural product growers and exporters, significantly increasing their potential to generate foreign currency, Agriculture State Minister Sophia Kassa announced during the Ethiopian Agricultural Investment Forum.

According to the Ethiopian News Agency, the Ethiopian government has created a conducive environment for private sector investment in agriculture, supported by various government institutions including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ethiopian Investment Commission, and the Development Bank of Ethiopia. She emphasized that the new macroeconomic policies are specifically designed to stimulate the agricultural sector, encouraging exporters to increase revenue generation significantly.

The state minister outlined the advantages Ethiopia holds, such as abundant water resources, fertile soil, and human resources, coupled with enabling technologies and supportive government policies, creating a compelling climate for both domestic and foreign investment in agriculture. The government’s active role in providing land, financial incentives, and technical assistance aims to bolster private sector participation and enhance overall productivity and export potential.

During the forum, an exhibition showcased agricultural technologies and products such as tractors, combine harvesters, specialized seeds, and organic fertilizers, highlighting the sector's innovation. Notably, Getish Desta from Afriflower commended the government's recent policy allowing the release of 100 percent of foreign currency earnings to exporters, which marks a significant shift from the previous 50 percent. This change is expected to attract more investors and stimulate further investment in the sector.

YBM Trading Manager Teferi Amena also shared insights into his company's role in processing avocados from thousands of farmers and how operating within government-supported industrial parks with full infrastructure has facilitated efficient agro-processing and export activities.

The forum and its accompanying exhibition serve as crucial platforms for demonstrating Ethiopia’s agricultural capabilities and investment opportunities to a global audience, aligning with the country's broader economic reforms aimed at enhancing manufacturing and exports.
