ADDIS ABABA — Pakistan has formally agreed to implement Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative within its major cities, including Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, among others. This development follows discussions between Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Jemal Beker, and Pakistan’s Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Coordinator, Romina Khurshid Alam. The Green Legacy Initiative, spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2019, aims for the ambitious planting of 50 billion trees in two phases to combat climate change. So far, more than 32.5 billion trees have been planted under this initiative.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the collaboration marks a significant step towards addressing climate change and environmental challenges through mutual support in skills, technology, and knowledge exchange. Ambassador Beker praised last year’s initiative launch in Islamabad, attended by senior government officials and stakeholders, as a cornerstone for future collaboration. Both Ethiopia and Pakistan express a strong commitment to joint efforts in combating climate challenges, with Alam highlighting the urgency of global cooperation against climate change. This partnership not only signifies a shared vision for a greener future but also reinforces the bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Pakistan in their fight against environmental degradation.
