Erongo youth among those to benefit from Y4H2 scholarships

The Erongo Region is one of several regions whose youth will benefit from the Government’s Youth for Green Hydrogen (Y4H2) scholarship programme in 2024.

The scholarships, which are made possible through a collaboration between the Namibian and German governments, will focus on master’s degrees and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses related to the Green Hydrogen value chain.

Erongo Governor Neville Andre Itope, during the announcement of the Y4H2 in Swakopmund on Wednesday, called on the qualifying youth within the region to take advantage of the opportunity, as the region is earmarked for major Green Hydrogen Projects.

“The prospects of green hydrogen and its economic potential hold enormous potential, and with its abundant, world-class renewable energy resources and increasing demand for green hydrogen worldwide, Namibia has become an early entrant in this new market,” he expressed.

He further noted that Namibia’s ambitions of becoming the leading exporter of Green Hydrogen on the African continent and helping the world achieve its quest for net-zero or low carbon emissions is fast becoming a reality.

“For this reason, we will need a more skilled workforce to ensure that we take part in the full value chain that Green Hydrogen is offering.”

Swakopmund Mayor Dina Namubes at the same event welcomed the initiative, stating that the town is inundated with youth seeking to better themselves, but there are very few opportunities and resources available for them.

“We believe with these scholarships, the many youths who are struggling to further their studies due to finances will be sorted out and they can make something of themselves, while also contributing to the country’s economy,” she said.

The applications are open to candidates aged between 18 and 35, and the scholarships will provide up to N.dollars 500 000 for a master’s degree and N.dollars 200 000 for a TVET Diploma/Certificate for the full duration of the study.

The office of the governor, in collaboration with the Erongo Regional Council, will assist in facilitating applicants within the region to submit their applications.
