Migori – Equity Bank has announced the sponsorship of 16 bright but needy students from Migori County under the Wings to Fly Scholarship Programme. This initiative will provide full educational support for these students for four years, covering all eight sub-counties of Migori County. The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Migori County Statehouse.

According to Kenya News Agency, who attended the event, the Wings to Fly Programme is a significant contributor to addressing the educational challenges faced by vulnerable families with talented children. He encouraged the scholarship recipients to strive for excellence, sharing his personal experience of benefiting from a scholarship during his schooling. Ayacko emphasized the transformative impact such support could have on their lives and academic careers.

In the previous year’s financial budget, Migori County allocated significant funds for scholarships, with 410 students receiving a total of 14 million shillings. Grants were given to 310 students, amounting to 11 million shillings, and over 1,600 students in vocational institutions received 29 million shillings. However, Ayacko expressed concern over the delayed disbursement of funds from the national government, which has affected the county’s ability to plan for this year’s scholarships.

The governor also called on other businesses to emulate Equity Bank’s commitment to supporting education for vulnerable children. Nicodemus Atela, Manager of Equity Bank’s Migori Branch, revealed that the bank received 800 applications for the scholarship this year, out of which 16 were selected. He noted a change from previous years, where they partnered with Elimu scholarships. This year, Elimu scholarships will focus solely on sponsoring students from refugee camps.

Migori County Director of Education, Jacob Onyiengo, confirmed that the government has maintained consistent school fees, ensuring stability in the educational sector.
