OKOVIMBURU: The Okovimburu village sports ground in the Epukiro Constituency is set to host a major event this weekend as the Epukiro Sports Council organizes its annual festive football and netball tournament. Known for its rich history and prestige, the tournament is a highlight in the Omaheke Region’s sporting calendar.
According to Namibia Press Agency, tournament organizer Ngatuuane Hange explained that the event, which began in 1985, serves as both a sporting and social development platform for aspiring athletes. The tournament allows participants to showcase their talents to scouts and potentially advance to top-tier football across the country. The tournament, conducted over two weekends due to the large number of competitors, attracts over 70 teams and a substantial audience, though participation is limited to teams from the Epukiro Constituency.
The Epukiro Sports Council has allocated a total prize pool of N.dollars 65,000, with N.dollars 45,000 designated for football and N.dollars 20,000 for ne
tball. Football champions will receive N.dollars 22,000, a trophy, and gold medals, while netball champions will be awarded N.dollars 10,000, a trophy, and gold medals. Various other monetary prizes and medals will be distributed to runners-up and semi-finalists in both categories. Additionally, over 15 awards will recognize outstanding individual performances throughout the tournament. Last year’s tournament saw Otjozondjima and Red Fire ya-Tumbonde crowned champions in football and netball, respectively.
