Environment Cycling Activists Arrive in Namibia After Journey from Kenya

Zambezi: Regional Commander, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo, on Wednesday, briefly received and welcomed three environment cycling activists who arrived in Namibia from Kenya. The trio traveled using electric bicycles, covering over 3,200 kilometers to promote green transportation as a strategy to reduce emissions.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the initiative titled 'Ride to Conference of the Parties 30 (COP 30)' began on 15 September 2025. The cyclists journeyed through Zambia en route to Windhoek, Namibia, before planning to fly to Bel©m, Brazil, to attend the COP 30 conference, scheduled for 10 - 21 November 2025. The team consists of 30-year-old Derrick Kidarasi and Enock Kitheka, 24, from Kenya, alongside 30-year-old Dean Meekson from Zambia.

Speaking to Nampa, Kidarasi described 'Ride to COP 30' as a youth-led mission focused on gathering African perspectives on environmental protection and climate change to develop actionable solutions. He emphasized the initiative's success in engaging communities along the route about their experiences with climate change and adaptation strategies. Kidarasi expressed his hope that COP 30 would mark a pivotal moment for integrating African viewpoints and challenges into the global climate change discourse.

The COP meetings are annual international gatherings where member countries of a UN treaty convene to discuss progress on climate change goals, assess efforts to limit global warming, and strategize on emission reductions.

Commissioner Shilelo wished the cyclists a safe journey and advised caution when traveling from Kongola to Divundu, a region known for wildlife presence in the Bwabwata National Park. Additional support and welcome were extended by officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, and the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports and Culture at the Wenela border post.
