Ouagadougou: Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ou©draogo recently met with a delegation of Energy Ministers from Niger, Djibouti, Chad, Mauritania, and a representative from Mali. This gathering occurred alongside the Desert to Power initiative’s ministerial meeting in Ouagadougou.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the delegation expressed their gratitude for the warm reception and leadership shown by Burkina Faso in promoting regional energy cooperation. The ministers reviewed the progress of the initiative since its launch in Ouagadougou in 2019.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of a shared vision and collective commitment among partner states. He highlighted the necessity to enhance cooperation and maintain a firm commitment to addressing energy challenges, which are crucial for economic and social development in Sahelian countries.

Professor Amadou Haoua, Niger’s Minister, remarked on the strategic significance of the Desert to Power initiative, which involves the Alliance of Sahel States, Mauritania, Chad, and Djibouti. She noted the project’s importance for addressing the chronic energy deficit in the region despite its vast solar potential.

The African Development Bank leads the Desert to Power project, aiming to produce up to 10 gigawatts of solar energy for participating countries. The project focuses on increasing energy production, expanding electricity grids, ensuring the viability of electricity companies, regional interconnection, and creating an environment conducive to private investment.

This regional collaboration marks a significant step towards energy autonomy and the structural transformation of Sahelian economies.
