Employment Rises and Unemployment Falls in Latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey

The government has expressed satisfaction with the latest findings of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS), which shows an increase in employment and a decrease in unemployment in the country.

According to Government of South Africa, the number of employed individuals rose by 399,000 to 16.7 million in the third quarter of 2023, up from 16.3 million in the second quarter. Additionally, the number of unemployed persons fell by 72,000 to 7.8 million, marking a 0.9% decrease in unemployment during the third quarter compared to the second quarter of 2023.

Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, commented on the survey’s findings, noting that they indicate a positive trend in the nation’s labor market. The increase in employment and the reduction in unemployment rates are seen as the result of efforts to tackle unemployment in the country. Ntshavheni attributed these results to the combined efforts of the public and private sectors, as well as the hard work of citizens. The survey’s findings are viewed as a sign of progress in addressing unemployment and promoting employment growth.

While the government is encouraged by the positive outcomes of the third quarter, it recognizes that challenges remain and more efforts are needed. The government remains committed to creating a supportive and dynamic labor market. Minister Ntshavheni stated that the government will continue to implement policies aimed at encouraging investment, stimulating economic activity, and promoting innovation, all of which are essential for sustained job creation.
