Mashishing Labour Centre closes due to theft of electrical connections

The Department of Employment and Labour: Mpumalanga has last Friday, October 21, 2022, closed the Mashishing Labour Centre due to noncompliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations.

This was after the Labour Centre was issued with a prohibition notice by one of the Occupational Health and Safety specialist. The notice prohibits operations in the building until the electrical installations are done by a registered competent person.

“The situation started to deteriorate in March when thieves started stealing electrical connections outside the building leading to live wires hanging and this poses health and safety risks to officials and clients,” said Isaiah Nkosi, the labour centre head.

The Chief Director Provincial Operations, Margaret Mazibuko said she was disappointed that the “people of Mashishing and surrounding areas are denied the services they deserve by thieves who do not care about other citizens’ lives. She said: “Despite this setback, the labour centre will continue assisting clients with enquiries and payment of claims. As for new applications and other matters, clients are advised to visit Burgersfort Labour Centre or Sabie satellite office.

The Mashishing Labour Centre will be closed until the electrical installations are restored and the community will be informed as soon as the centre reopens.

The Department apologises for the inconvenience the closure may have caused. Clients are also advised to access the services of the Department online at www.labour.gov.za.
