EMBU: Embu County Government officials and security agencies have expressed concern over the resurgence of illicit and counterfeit liquor within the county. Governor Cecily Mbarire emphasized the urgency of intensifying efforts to eliminate illegal brew operations and underground markets, stressing that the fight against these practices was crucial to maintain the gains previously achieved.
According to Kenya News Agency, Governor Mbarire highlighted the increasing collection and recycling of empty beer bottles as a worrying sign that could indicate illegal alcohol packaging activities. Speaking during a meeting with county security teams, she announced plans to launch and intensify crackdowns on illicit brews to prevent their return to the market. The Governor also declared that unlicensed bars would be shut down, noting that more than 100 bars are currently operating without proper licenses.
Governor Mbarire further addressed the rise in the sale and consumption of narcotics, notably bhang, in major towns
across the county. She stressed the importance of a collaborative approach with local administration to establish a reporting mechanism aimed at identifying and prosecuting peddlers effectively.
County Commissioner Jack Obuo added that multi-agency teams have been activated at all levels to ensure a firm response to those involved in the illicit liquor and narcotics trade, in accordance with the law.
