EMBU – In a significant operation against illegal alcohol, Embu County has seen the closure of 58 bars and the arrest of 84 individuals involved in the illicit trade.
According to Kenya News Agency, the crackdown is focused on eliminating the sale and consumption of harmful illicit brews within the county. The targeted establishments were found to be in violation of regulations, including operating without the necessary permits and situating close to educational institutions and in non-gazetted areas. The enforcement action reflects a concerted effort to enforce existing liquor laws strictly.
During a youth forum hosted by REINVENT at Talent Academy Hall, Obuo highlighted the ongoing efforts to curb illegal alcohol distribution and consumption. He stressed the determination of local authorities to extend the operation, targeting bars that operate outside legally permitted hours or those that commence business early in the morning and close late at night.
The recent measures build on earlier actions by the County Government, which revoked the licenses of over 500 bars located in residential neighborhoods or near schools, emphasizing a commitment to protect the community and particularly the younger population from exposure to alcohol-related harm.
The County Commissioner’s announcement underscores a clear message to liquor business operators in Embu: compliance with regulations is mandatory, and the crackdown will persist to ensure that only licensed establishments in appropriate locations can operate.
