The Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Embu branch Show opened its doors to the public Thursday at Njukiri show ground after a two-year hiatus occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event themed ‘Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Development’ was marked by low turnout, which organisers attributed to the disruption caused by the pandemic.

‘It is like we are bouncing back after the break and that has really affected us in one way or another, especially with attendance,’ County ASK Chairman John Mukundi said.

Mukundi said it is a good forum particularly for producers and other players in the agricultural industry, to interact on the latest production skills and emerging trends that will assist farmers in increasing production and incomes.

‘It is also a good platform to engage and promote interest in agriculture among learners as a viable and attractive source of jobs,’ he said.

Some of the exhibitors exuded confidence that the event would go a long way in enabling them to interact with consumers of their products and services as well as open new market opportunities.

KTDA Zone Five Quality Assurance Manager Obed Onduso said they were in the process of introducing tea wine, which was a new product besides others such as orthodox and specialty teas.

The agency’s Projects Officer, Lucy Chege, called on farmers to embrace diversification to increase sources of income instead of relying on tea alone.

Entertainment was plentiful for school-going children and families, with lots of games and funfair activities.

County Commissioner Jack Obuo, who was the guest of honour, said security had been enhanced to ensure the event lived up to its billing.
