Information, Communication, and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo is focusing on rejuvenating soccer in the Nyanza region through the Eliud Owalo Super Cup tournament, 2023. The tournament is part of a broader effort to rediscover and nurture grassroots football talent in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, During the tournament’s second day of matches at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Mamboleo, CS Owalo highlighted the rich history of talented players in the region who have lacked exposure and opportunities. The Eliud Owalo Foundation organized the inaugural competition, featuring teams from Kisumu, Migori, Siaya, and Homa Bay counties, to identify and promote local soccer talents. Homa Bay Combined secured a spot in the finals after defeating Migori Combined, while Kisumu Combined FC overcame Siaya Combined FC to join them.
The finals and third-place playoff are scheduled at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Mamboleo. Cash prizes of Sh400,000 and Sh300,000 will be awarded to the first and second place teams, respectively, with additional prizes for third and fourth positions. The Foundation collaborated with legendary footballers like Tobias Ochola, James Goro Oronge, Peter Dawo, and Gerald Omollo to scout for the best players to form the Nyanza Combined team. This team will play against Gor Mahia at Nyilima Grounds in Siaya County. CS Owalo encouraged local residents to support the initiative and help establish the region as a soccer stronghold. Peter Dawo noted the untapped talent in the region and expressed hope that such initiatives would lead to more teams from Nyanza joining Kenya’s Premier League.
