Windhoek: The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) on Tuesday reported a case of suspected drowning after a vehicle driven by an 87-year-old man was swept away by strong currents in Windhoek. On Tuesday, the capital city saw heavy rains that resulted in some areas experiencing flash floods.
According to Namibia Press Agency, NamPol spokesperson, Chief Inspector Elifas Kuwinga, explained that the man was in the company of two female occupants when the car was washed away. "It's alleged that on Tuesday, 04 February 2025, at approximately 15h37, an incident occurred involving a suspected drowning. Two women, aged 47 and 49, were passengers in a small hatchback vehicle driven by an 87-year-old male driver. The driver was in the process of dropping them off at a bus stop when the incident took place," Kuwinga said.
He added that while attempting to cross the river on Sean McBride Street in Auasblick, the vehicle became stuck. "As water levels rapidly rose, flooding the car, the current began to sweep it away. The two women managed to exit the vehicle; however, the driver remained inside," Kuwinga detailed.
The report indicated that the car was later found without the driver. "The vehicle, along with the driver, was carried away by the strong floodwaters. It eventually came to a stop near the bridge under Robert Mugabe Avenue, having been swept from Sean McBride Street through Jason Wanahepo Ndadi Street, covering a distance of over a kilometre. Upon inspection, no one was found inside," the report noted.
A search for the missing individual is being carried out by emergency services.
