Ouagadougou: The Ouagadougou Shooting Star (EFO) took center stage at the U16 and U18 Athletics Championships of the Central League, named in honor of former African triple jump champion Olivier Sanon. At the event held at the 4-August Stadium, EFO emerged victorious, securing 41 medals, including 16 gold.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the championships served as a tribute to Olivier Sanon and brought together young athletes from various clubs. EFO led the medal tally with 41 medals, followed by AS Douanes with 14 medals, and ACB with 13 medals. AS Douanes' Djakalidja Traore achieved double gold in the 800m and 1500m at the U18 level, attributing his success to hard work and self-confidence.
In the girls' events, Guimbou Tewende Fran§oise shone by winning two gold medals in discus throw and shot put. Despite a dip in her shot put performance due to illness, she remains determined to excel. "I dream of becoming a great athlete and representing my country, Burkina Faso, with distinction," she stated.
Bertrand Zoungrana, vice-president of the Central Athletics League, emphasized the significance of the event as a preparatory platform for Burkinabe athletes targeting the Five Nations tournament. Hugues Fabrice Zango, a Burkinabe Olympic medalist, expressed satisfaction with the results, especially in the triple jump event.
