ECN Urges Increased Collaboration in Voter Education

Windhoek: Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Elsie Nghikembua, has called on Namibians to collectively engage in promoting voter education to ensure improved voter turnout. Nghikembua made these remarks during a press briefing in Windhoek, where the ECN provided updates on the Regional Councils and Local Authority elections.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Nghikembua emphasized that the commission had fulfilled its responsibilities regarding voter education, starting with civic education closer to the elections, followed by voter education initiatives. The ECN had deployed voter education officers daily across all constituencies, ensuring each had a dedicated officer to engage with the community.

Zenia Klazen, ECN's Director of Operations, disclosed that N.dollars 26 million has been allocated for voter education under the 2025/2026 budget. Nghikembua also highlighted significant challenges faced during the voting process, such as rain in several regions, voters arriving at incorrect polling stations, and some presenting outdated voter cards.

Nghikembua explained that despite efforts to inform voters about the necessity to vote within their registered constituency, some still appeared at incorrect polling stations, necessitating redirection by polling officials. She commended voters for maintaining peace and order throughout the election process.

"We would like to express our gratitude to all registered voters who exercised their civic right by casting their votes, and for maintaining peace and calm during the voting process. Our plea is that this positive spirit continues through to the counting of votes and the announcement of results," said Nghikembua.
