Windhoek: The seventh Regional Councils and Local Authorities Elections commenced without incident across Namibia on Wednesday, with all 4,827 polling stations opening on time. This was announced by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) Chairperson, Elsie Nghikembua, during a midday briefing at the ECN Results Centre in Windhoek.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Nghikembua stated that voter turnout has been encouraging, with many citizens arriving early to cast their ballots. She noted that measures to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities and the elderly are in place, allowing all Namibians to participate fully in the democratic process.

To reinforce the credibility of the electoral system, Nghikembua noted that strict protocols have been implemented to safeguard the integrity of the elections, with political party agents and accredited observers stationed at polling venues nationwide. She further advised political parties to refrain from having any party materials around the polling stations. "Having party materials around the polling stations is a violation of the control act, and if you're caught in violation of this act, the law will deal with you," said the chairperson.

She further urged all registered voters in the country to exercise their democratic right. "An election is not just a procedure, it is a demonstration of our democratic rights and responsibilities," said Nghikembua. She further called for patience and respect among voters and officials throughout the day, emphasizing unity and the importance of strengthening Namibia's democratic ideals.
