ADDIS ABABA — The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has announced that the 7th African Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Day will be observed across the continent this weekend, with a particular emphasis on the importance of digitalization to enhance civil registration and vital statistics activities. This annual event, observed on August 10, aims to raise public awareness about the critical role of timely recording of life events, such as births and deaths, through efficient systems.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, this year’s celebration will be held under the theme "Strengthening the Linkage of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics to Legal Identity Systems through Digitalization for Enhanced Inclusion." The theme underscores the vital role that digital integration plays in harmonizing civil registration and vital statistics systems with legal identity structures, which is essential for promoting effective governance, protecting individual rights, and ensuring efficient service delivery.
The event represents a key moment for reflection, collaboration, and action to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics systems across Africa, particularly as the continent works to meet the commitments under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the goal of achieving universal legal identity. ECA noted that linking these systems helps ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of population data and records of vital events, while legal identity systems provide official recognition of individuals. This integration is crucial for maintaining reliable demographic information needed for planning, policymaking, and service delivery.
