EASTERN CAPE - The Feather Market hall in Gqeberha was the scene of the Eastern Cape Annual Provincial Excellence Awards on Thursday evening, 7 December 2023, hosted by the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene.
According to South African Police Service, The event, characterized by elegance and glamour, honored police officers for their outstanding performance during the 2022/2023 financial year.
Among the evening's distinguished winners were:
Admin Employee of the Year (Level 1 – 4): Cleaner NR Pambaniso from SAPS Kwazakhele (Nelson Mandela Bay District).
Vispol Employee of the Year (Level 5 – 7): W/O S Dick from the K-9 Unit in Gqeberha (Nelson Mandela Bay District).
Vispol Employee of the Year (8 – 12) and Newsmaker of the Year: Brig V Moodley, for leading rescue efforts in the Turkey earthquake earlier this year, which garnered global media attention.
Man of the Year: Sgt Kodwa from SAPS Indwe (Chris Hani District).
Woman of the Year: Col Sabane from Provincial Head Office (Labour Relations).
Vispol Team of the Year and Overall Winner: SAPS Ngcobo Crime Prevention Task Team, recognized for their dedication, successful operations, and heroic actions during a business robbery, which sadly resulted in the loss of a team member.
The awards were part of the build-up to the National Excellence Awards in Cape Town, scheduled for January 2024. In preparation, a fundraising golf challenge was held on 5 December 2023 at the Walmer Golf Club, raising funds for the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET), which supports the children of SAPS employees who died in the line of duty.
Lieutenant General Mene, in her address, commended the awardees and nominees for their exemplary service and dedication. She expressed immense pride in the officers and teams, describing them as the brightest stars. Mene also paid tribute to fallen officers, acknowledging the sacrifices they made in the line of duty.
The event not only celebrated the accomplishments of individual officers and teams but also highlighted the broader commitment of the SAPS to honor and support its members' dedication to public safety in South Africa.
