EACC Calls for Transparency and Integrity to Tame Corruption in Garissa

Garissa: The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has called on government officers, youth, and members of the public in Garissa County to embrace transparency and integrity in their daily interactions. This appeal was made during the commission's education and public sensitisation outreach focusing on integrity, corruption prevention, leadership, accountability, and adherence to ethical standards.

According to Kenya News Agency, EACC's Deputy Director for Education and Public Awareness, Dr. Emily Mworia, emphasized the importance of preparing young people for good governance with integrity at its core. Dr. Mworia stated, "We are here to sensitise the public through a series of activities, including an engagement with students at Garissa University. As a commission, we acknowledge that 75 per cent of our population is the youth, and them being the leaders of today and tomorrow, we need to equip them with the necessary skills and prepare them for good governance."

Dr. Mworia further highlighted the inclusion of public officers in the initiative, noting, "Similarly, we are not leaving out the public officers. We will be having a sensitisation with the heads of various departments under the national government so that we promote good practices."

Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo affirmed the government's stance against corruption, stating that corrupt officials would face the full force of the law. Mwabudzo remarked, "Integrity in public service must be maintained. This sensitisation is for all government officers wherever they are: we must conduct our responsibilities in line with the law. We are working hard as the county team to ensure that we remain faithful to our duty."

He further warned, "Anyone found flouting the integrity act will face the law so that we tame them not to repeat the crimes and also warn others. We cannot build a strong foundation for our nation through corruption."

The initiative encourages public officers to promote transparency and integrity in their interactions with the public, reiterating that the fight against corruption is a shared responsibility. The EACC's outreach in Garissa is part of a broader national strategy to engage the public and institutions in the fight against corruption through education, public awareness, and capacity-building initiatives.
