Windhoek: The Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) on Sunday confirmed the death of convicted double-murderer Ernst Lichtenstrasser, who was found dead in his cell at the Windhoek Correctional Facility on Sunday morning.
According to Namibia Press Agency, NCS spokesperson Salmi Hangula confirmed the incident but did not disclose further details surrounding his death. Preliminary information suggests that Lichtenstrasser might have committed suicide.
Lichtenstrasser, who was convicted in April 2024, was serving two life sentences for the murder of Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) Executive Director, Eckhart Mueller, and his deputy, Heimo Hellwig. The two were shot dead at the institute's Arandis campus on 15 April 2019.
In 2023, he was admitted to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital's intensive care unit following an apparent overdose, which was reported as a suicide attempt.
