Dori: The Dori Detention and Correctional Facility (MACD) commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day from July 31 to August 1, 2026, highlighting the theme: 'Contribution of penitentiary centers to the vocational training of prisoners and to achieving food self-sufficiency.' The celebration included activities aimed at fostering a more humane justice system.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the director of MACD, Pierre Lankoand©, emphasized that Nelson Mandela International Day, established in 2009, aims to raise awareness among prisoners about their rights and to underscore the social reintegration initiatives in penitentiary establishments. It also seeks to promote closer ties between inmates and the wider community. The day serves as a platform for reflecting on the role of penitentiary establishments in preparing prisoners for societal re-entry.
The director highlighted that inmates at MACD are engaged in various productive activities such as market gardening, livestock farming, washing equipment, and cleaning the city's gutters, which contribute to enhancing the living environment. Over the two days of commemoration, participants engaged in national flag-raising, prison cleanup, board games, public lectures, and a community meal to strengthen bonds between inmates and guests.
The conference featured presentations on "Human rights, social cohesion and peace" and "Community service as an instrument for reducing prison sentences and social reintegration." Comrade Pierre Lankoand© urged regional bodies and partners to support the event, noting its role in giving hope to the incarcerated and promoting their reintegration.
Comrade Auguste Kinda, the Secretary General of the Liptako and Soum region, presided over the ceremony. He commended the prison administration's efforts towards rehabilitating prisoners and reiterated the commitment to a more humane justice system, efficient prison administration, and a united society. He expressed belief in the potential for development in anyone receiving appropriate support, regardless of past mistakes, and congratulated all involved in enhancing the prison administration.
Through this commemoration, the Dori Detention and Correctional Facility reaffirmed its commitment to making detention a preparatory phase for social reintegration. By focusing on vocational training, productive activities, and human rights, the prison administration aims to equip prisoners with the tools to rebuild their future and contribute positively to society's development.
