Diplomats Reflect on the Historical and Symbolic Importance of Adwa Victory

ADDIS ABABA — During the 128th commemoration of the Victory of Adwa at the newly unveiled Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, diplomats from various nations highlighted the event’s continued relevance and its representation of independence and national sovereignty for black people globally. The Victory of Adwa, celebrated across Ethiopia, symbolizes the defeat of Italian colonial forces in 1896 and remains a pivotal moment in African and global history.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Armenia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Sahak Sargsyan, expressed admiration for the Ethiopian people’s pride in their historical victory, emphasizing its significance not only for Ethiopia but for all African nations. Ambassador Sargsyan also brought attention to the lesser-known participation of Armenians alongside Ethiopians in their struggle against colonial forces, noting it as a modest yet significant contribution to the victory.

Zambia’s Political and Administration Counselor, Nowa Sibonjo, spoke on the victory’s role as a unifying symbol for the continent. He underlined the importance of unity and pan-Africanism as essential elements for Africa’s future development and its ability to address contemporary challenges.

Brigadier General Shariful Islam from Bangladesh, serving as the Defense Attaché, lauded Ethiopia for its unique historical status as a nation that successfully resisted colonization. He remarked on the Adwa victory as a critical demonstration of Ethiopian resilience and independence, highlighting its significance not only for Ethiopians but for black people worldwide as a testament to the possibility of sovereign endurance.
