ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedion Timotheos, emphasized the successful diplomatic and political efforts undertaken to protect Ethiopia’s national interests and enhance its global influence during the BRICS Leaders’ Summit held in Kazan, Russia. The summit included participation from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and a high-level ministerial delegation.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the 16th BRICS Summit served as a platform for Ethiopia to engage extensively in discussions on critical agendas, enhancing the nation’s diplomatic presence. Foreign Minister Timotheos detailed that Ethiopia’s participation ensured its interests were safeguarded and its voice amplified internationally. The summit also resulted in significant decisions related to economic cooperation, regional security, and United Nations Security Council reform.
Dr. Gedion highlighted Ethiopia’s alignment with the collective positions of the African continent during the summit, illustrating the nation’s strategic diplomatic appro
ach. The summit witnessed numerous countries seeking partnerships with BRICS nations, during which Ethiopia engaged in productive bilateral talks with various representatives. Notably, some BRICS partner countries sought Ethiopia’s support for their full membership bids in the organization.
In these interactions, Ethiopia presented a firm stance, emphasizing its strategic priorities and commitment to African interests. Gedion noted discussions between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscoring Ethiopia’s historical ties with Russia. These talks focused on deepening bilateral cooperation, with both leaders agreeing on strengthening collaborations and outlining future partnership paths.
