Kisumu: A digital taxi hailing app, YEGO mobility Kenya, has rolled out new security features aimed at enhancing the safety of both drivers and passengers using the service. This move comes amid growing concerns over attacks on digital taxi drivers and riders throughout the country. According to Kenya News Agency, YEGO's Chief Executive Officer, Karanvir Singh, announced the new security measures during the app's launch in Kisumu. The features include real-time back-end trip tracking, an SOS alert button for emergencies, and comprehensive driver background checks. These enhancements are designed to ensure safety during each trip for both drivers and passengers. The real-time tracking feature allows users to share their location and trip details with up to five family members and friends, thereby boosting their safety. Additionally, YEGO offers 24-hour customer service, which swiftly responds to emergencies by monitoring trip anomalies such as sudden route changes or prolonged stops. Karanvir noted that the recent killing of a Mombasa-based driver, Victoria Muloki, highlighted the need for improved safety measures in the industry. With the app now operational in several major cities, including Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, YEGO aims to set a standard in safety within the competitive taxi-hailing sector. Beyond security, YEGO offers drivers significant financial benefits, paying 82% per trip, which is the highest rate in the region. This is part of an effort to offset the rising cost of living while considering customers' ability to pay. YEGO has already onboarded over 25,000 drivers and plans to expand into other major towns across Kenya. The company's initiatives have received praise from the Kenya Digital Taxi Drivers Association. Imran Omoth, the association's Kisumu County Chairman, acknowledged the app's potential to secure drivers who face increasing threats, particularly as cases of attacks on drivers have risen in recent months. Paul Omolo, Secretary General of the KDTA, emphasized that YEGO's approac h of incorporating driver feedback positions the app as a facilitator of sustainable growth within the sector. The app also allows drivers to withdraw earnings from corporate trips even before clients have made payments, providing financial security and flexibility.
