Kisumu, Kenya – The Kisumu Journalists Network (KJN) has elected Dickens Wasonga as its new chairman. Wasonga expressed his commitment to fulfilling the promises he made during his election campaign.

According to Kenya News Agency, Wasonga emphasized his focus on delivering pre-election pledges, which include the formation of a cooperative society and the creation of a platform for independent journalists to publish their content. He plans to establish a website to serve as this platform and intends to involve professional journalists in managing the site. “We will engage an editorial team to be in charge of the website because among us are qualified technical editors with more than sufficient skills in matters of writing or even televised broadcast who will undertake the marketing of the websites to accord the necessary visibility,” said Wasonga.

Additionally, Wasonga pledged to initiate a group insurance cover for journalists in Kisumu to provide support in cases of illness or accidents. He also expressed his intention to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to expand the Kisumu Journalists Network and increase its membership.

Wasonga won the election with 47 votes, surpassing his closest rival Rushdie Oudia, who garnered 24 votes. His election marks a new chapter for KJN, with a focus on enhancing the welfare and professional opportunities for journalists in the region.
